Course overview

Power Apps built by a small team often work well until users grow into the hundreds and data into the tens of thousands of records. Then the app opens slowly, searches miss records because of delegation limits, the same formula is copied across many screens and becomes hard to change, users see data they should not, and every fix is made directly in production. These problems come from a design that was never prepared to scale.

This course takes people who already build canvas apps to enterprise-grade apps. Learners design a data model on Dataverse, master delegation with large data sets, and write advanced Power Fx with With, ForAll, multi-record Patch, user-defined functions and user-defined types. They build component libraries and responsive screens with modern controls, tune performance with Monitor, secure data with security roles, integrate with Power Automate, get to know model-driven apps and custom pages, and ship apps to production with solutions and pipelines. The course closes with a capstone app for a department. (2 days, 6 hours per day, 12 hours in total, Advanced level.)

  • A basic understanding of tables and data relationships
  • Your own or your organisation's Microsoft 365 account with Power Apps Premium rights and an environment that has Dataverse
  • A laptop with internet access and Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome, plus a phone for testing apps

Curriculum

Course Details

This course focuses on building enterprise-grade Power Apps on Dataverse. It runs for 2 days, 6 hours per day (12 hours in total, 09:00-16:00), as lectures with labs and workshops built on one sample request system throughout. Advanced level. It builds on Microsoft Power Apps, which teaches canvas apps from the ground up, and covers Dataverse data modelling, delegation, advanced Power Fx, user-defined functions, component libraries, responsive layout, Monitor, security roles, Power Automate, model-driven apps, custom pages, solutions, pipelines and Test Studio. Learners use their own or their organisation's account with Power Apps Premium rights, or a developer environment they sign up for; the institute does not provide accounts, licences or environments.

Day 1 Dataverse and Enterprise-Grade Power Fx

Section 1: Enterprise App Architecture

  • Signs that a team app is outgrowing its original structure
  • Choosing between canvas apps, model-driven apps and custom pages
  • Build apps inside a solution with a publisher and control naming standards
  • Lab: create a solution and lay out the screens of a request app

Section 2: Lab: Designing a Data Model on Dataverse

  • Tables, columns, choices and which data types to pick
  • One-to-many and many-to-many relationships and delete behaviour
  • Alternate keys, business rules and formula columns
  • Lab: design request, line item and approver tables with relationships

Section 3: Lab: Delegation and Large Data Sets

  • Functions and operators that delegate to Dataverse, and the warnings in Studio
  • The data row limit, and why testing with small data is not enough
  • Use views, filter on lookups and select only the columns you need
  • Lab: a search screen over tens of thousands of records that returns every match

Section 4: Lab: Advanced Power Fx

  • With for temporary values, and ForAll with Patch to save many records at once
  • Named formulas, user-defined functions and user-defined types in App.Formulas
  • IfError, Error and App.OnError for app-wide error handling
  • Lab: move formulas repeated across screens into shared functions

Section 5: Lab: Component Libraries

  • Design components with input and output custom properties
  • Component libraries shared across apps, and updating versions
  • An overview of the Power Apps component framework for code-based needs
  • Lab: build a header, menu and confirmation dialog as a component library

Section 6: Lab: Responsive Layout and Modern Controls

  • Vertical and horizontal containers, and formulas that adapt to screen size
  • Modern controls and themes so every organisational app looks consistent
  • Designing for mobile use and accessibility
  • Lab: adapt screens for phone, tablet and desktop
Day 2 Performance, Security and Delivery

Section 7: Lab: Performance and Monitor

  • Measure app load time and data calls with Monitor and App Checker
  • Slim down OnStart with named formulas, StartScreen and Concurrent
  • Reduce the number of data calls and the amount of data retrieved
  • Lab: tune a slow app and measure before and after

Section 8: Lab: Data Security

  • How sharing an app differs from permissions on the data
  • Security roles, business units, teams and privilege levels
  • Column security and hiding data users should not see
  • Lab: set up requester, approver and admin roles and test with different accounts

Section 9: Lab: Power Automate and Offline Use

  • Call cloud flows from an app, passing parameters and receiving results
  • Deciding whether the app saves directly or hands work to a background flow
  • An overview of offline canvas apps on Dataverse and their limits
  • Lab: a submit button that calls a flow to notify approvers and returns the result

Section 10: Lab: Model-Driven Apps and Custom Pages

  • Build a model-driven app from Dataverse tables
  • Forms, views, dashboards and business process flows
  • Custom pages for screens that need canvas-style flexibility
  • Lab: a back-office admin app with a custom summary page

Section 11: Lab: ALM and Testing

  • Environment variables and connection references in apps
  • Managed solutions, Pipelines in Power Platform and app versioning
  • Automated app testing with Test Studio
  • Lab: deploy an app from Dev to Test and verify it with a test suite

Section 12: Workshop: Department App Capstone

  • Pick a case from your own work, such as requests, asset audits or task tracking
  • Design the data model, security roles and reusable components
  • Build a fully delegable app, measure its performance and connect a flow
  • Present the work, review it together and wrap up with a pre-production checklist

Instructors

Frequently asked questions

How does this course differ from Microsoft Power Apps?

This course builds on Microsoft Power Apps, which teaches canvas apps from the ground up with SharePoint and SQL Server. This course focuses on enterprise apps on Dataverse: data modelling, delegation with large data sets, advanced Power Fx, component libraries, performance tuning, security roles, model-driven apps and ALM with solutions and pipelines.

Which licences do I need, and does the institute provide them?

The institute does not provide accounts, licences or environments. Dataverse is a premium capability, so you need your own or your organisation's Power Apps Premium rights, or a developer environment or trial set up in advance. Check that you can create Dataverse tables before the training day.

What background do I need?

You should already build canvas apps and be comfortable with galleries, forms, collections and basic Power Fx such as Filter, LookUp and Patch. If you have never built an app, start with Microsoft Power Apps first.

Do my existing SharePoint-based apps have to move to Dataverse?

Not every app. The class explains when an app should move to Dataverse, for example when data has complex relationships, needs record-level security or grows large. The ideas on delegation, performance, components and advanced Power Fx still apply to SharePoint-based apps.

Does this course teach coding with the Power Apps component framework?

Not in depth. The course focuses on low-code apps with Power Fx and component libraries, and gives an overview of the Power Apps component framework so you know when to use it and what extra skills it needs.

Can I use the apps from class in my organisation?

Yes. Every app lives in a solution that you can export and import into your organisation's environment, but it should be reviewed by your Power Platform admins for permissions and data policies before going live, and you should avoid confidential real data during class.
