Course overview

Many organisations start with Power Automate through small flows built by individual teams. As the number of flows grows and they become part of core work, problems appear. Flows stop when their maker changes jobs, URLs and email addresses are hard-coded into every action, thousands of records make flows slow or hit request limits, and when something fails nobody knows until a user complains. All of this can be avoided by designing flows the enterprise way from the start.

This course takes people who already build cloud flows to the next level. Learners build flows inside solutions with environment variables and connection references, split reusable steps into child flows, use Dataverse as the workflow database, build Try, Catch, Finally error handling and multi-stage approvals that escalate. They then connect external systems with HTTP and custom connectors, handle large data sets with pagination and concurrency, monitor runs, and move solutions from Dev to Test and Production with pipelines, alongside governance practices. The course closes with a capstone that builds a department-level solution. (2 days, 6 hours per day, 12 hours in total, Advanced level.)

Curriculum

Course Details

This course focuses on designing Power Automate cloud flows for the enterprise. It runs for 2 days, 6 hours per day (12 hours in total, 09:00-16:00), as lectures with labs and workshops. Advanced level. It builds on Power Automate Cloud for Business, which teaches building flows with Microsoft 365, and concentrates on solution-aware flows, environment variables, connection references, child flows, Dataverse, error handling, multi-stage approvals, HTTP and custom connectors, pagination and concurrency, monitoring, pipelines and governance, finishing with a capstone that builds a department-level solution. Learners use their own or their organisation's Microsoft 365 account with Power Automate Premium rights; the institute does not provide accounts or licences. Desktop flows are not covered; for RPA on a computer, see Advanced Power Automate Desktop.

Day 1 Designing Enterprise Flows on Dataverse

Section 1: Enterprise Flow Architecture

  • Where team-level flows tend to break when they scale across the organisation
  • Separate Dev, Test and Production environments, and an overview of Managed Environments
  • Solution-aware flows: building flows inside a solution from the start
  • Lab: create a solution and move an existing flow into it

Section 2: Lab: Environment Variables and Connection References

  • Environment variable types: Text, Number, JSON, Data source and Secret
  • Move environment-specific values such as SharePoint sites and approver emails out of the flow
  • Connection references, and switching connections without editing the flow
  • Lab: refactor a flow until not a single value is hard-coded

Section 3: Lab: Child Flows and Modular Design

  • When to split steps out into a child flow
  • The Manually trigger a flow trigger and the Respond to a Power App or flow action
  • Design child flow inputs and outputs so they can be reused in many places
  • Lab: turn logging and notifications into a shared child flow

Section 4: Lab: Dataverse for Workflows

  • When Dataverse beats a SharePoint list for complex data and permissions
  • The When a row is added, modified or deleted trigger with Filter rows and Select columns
  • List rows with OData filters, expand queries and FetchXML
  • Lab: a flow that tracks request status on a Dataverse table

Section 5: Production-Grade Error Handling

  • The Try, Catch, Finally pattern with scopes and Configure run after
  • Read scope results with result() to find the failed action and build a readable error message
  • Exponential retry policies, timeouts and Terminate
  • Lab: a central error handler that logs to Dataverse and alerts in Teams

Section 6: Lab: Advanced Approvals

  • Multi-stage approvals by amount, with the approver chain read from a table
  • Custom responses, delegation and reassigning approvers
  • Timeouts, reminders and escalation when nobody responds
  • Lab: a multi-stage approval workflow that escalates automatically
Day 2 External Systems, Performance and ALM

Section 7: Lab: HTTP, REST APIs and Webhooks

  • The HTTP action: methods, headers and common authentication types
  • Parse JSON and generating a schema from sample data
  • The When an HTTP request is received trigger for webhooks from other systems
  • Lab: pull data from an external REST API and save it to Dataverse

Section 8: Lab: Custom Connectors

  • Create a custom connector from an OpenAPI file or define the actions yourself
  • API key and OAuth 2.0 authentication
  • Test, share and include a custom connector in a solution
  • Lab: a custom connector that calls a sample API, used inside a flow

Section 9: Large Data, Pagination and Concurrency

  • Pagination and thresholds for List rows and Get items
  • Concurrency control for Apply to each and for triggers
  • Request limits, throttling and designing within the limits
  • Lab: process thousands of records faster and measure before and after

Section 10: Monitoring and Maintaining Flows

  • Read run history and the flow checker to catch problems before users do
  • Power Automate monitoring and analytics pages
  • Alerts when a flow is turned off or a connection expires
  • Lab: a run summary dashboard built from the Dataverse log

Section 11: Lab: ALM with Pipelines and Governance

  • Managed solutions and Pipelines in Power Platform from Dev to Test and Production
  • Set environment variable values and connection references during deployment
  • Data policies, standard versus premium connectors and an overview of the CoE Starter Kit
  • Lab: deploy a solution through a pipeline and verify it in the target

Section 12: Workshop: Department-Level Capstone Solution

  • Pick a case from your own work, such as purchasing, HR or customer requests
  • Design a solution with Dataverse, child flows, approvals and a central error handler
  • Connect an external system with HTTP or a custom connector
  • Deploy across environments, then present the work with a pre-production checklist

Instructors

Frequently asked questions

How does this course differ from Power Automate Cloud for Business?

This course builds on Power Automate Cloud for Business, which teaches building cloud flows with Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, Forms and basic approvals. This course is about making flows enterprise-ready: solutions, environment variables, connection references, child flows, Dataverse, production-grade error handling, HTTP and custom connectors, handling large data sets and deploying with pipelines.

Which licences do I need, and does the institute provide them?

The institute does not provide accounts, licences or environments. You use your own or your organisation's Microsoft 365 account. Dataverse, HTTP and custom connectors are premium features, so you need Power Automate Premium or a trial or developer environment that you sign up for in advance.

What background do I need?

You should already build working cloud flows, be comfortable with triggers, conditions, Apply to each and basic expressions, and be able to read some JSON. If you have never built a flow, start with Power Automate Cloud for Business first.

Can I do the pipelines lab without admin rights?

Setting up pipelines requires Power Platform admin rights. You can do more in your own developer environment. Without those rights, the instructor demonstrates the steps, and you still practise exporting and importing managed solutions yourself.

Does this course cover desktop flows or Copilot Studio?

No. This course covers cloud flows only. For RPA on a computer, see Advanced Power Automate Desktop, and for building AI agents, see AI Agents with Copilot Studio.

Can I use the flows from class in my organisation?

Yes. Every lab is built in a solution you can export and import into your organisation's environment, but it should be reviewed by your Power Platform admins against your data policies and standards before going live, and you should avoid confidential real data during class.
