Course overview

Document work in many organisations still relies on people keying in data: invoices, receipts, request forms and customer emails that have to be read and sorted one by one. Many teams already use Power Automate and Power Apps but do not realise that AI Builder can read documents, extract data, classify text and summarise content out of the box, with no code and no need to build AI models themselves, or where to put human review so the results can be trusted.

This course teaches AI Builder systematically. Learners start with AI hub and prebuilt models for invoices, receipts, text recognition and text analysis, then build prompts that take text, documents or images and return JSON, with responsible AI practices. They go on to build a custom document processing model for their own documents, use every model in Power Automate and Power Apps, add human review based on confidence scores and plan Copilot Credits consumption. The course closes with a capstone that builds an automated document processing system. (2 days, 6 hours per day, 12 hours in total, Intermediate level.)

Curriculum

Course Details

This course is entirely about using AI Builder on Power Platform. It runs for 2 days, 6 hours per day (12 hours in total, 09:00-16:00), as lectures with labs and workshops on a sample company's documents. Intermediate level. It builds on Power Automate Cloud for Business and Microsoft Power Apps, which only introduce AI Builder briefly, and covers prebuilt models for invoices, receipts and text, prompts that take documents or images, document processing models, custom text models, use in Power Automate and Power Apps, human review and credit planning. Learners use their own or their organisation's premium rights; the institute does not provide accounts, licences, credits or environments. From 1 November 2026, AI Builder usage under new licences draws on Copilot Credits instead of AI Builder credits.

Day 1 Prebuilt Models and Prompts

Section 1: Getting to Know AI Builder and AI hub

  • Where AI Builder sits in Power Platform and how it works with Power Automate and Power Apps
  • Prebuilt versus custom models, and the work each suits
  • AI Builder credits, Copilot Credits and the changes from late 2026
  • Lab: explore AI hub and test models with sample files

Section 2: Lab: Invoices and Receipts

  • What invoice processing and receipt processing can extract
  • Read results, fields, line items and confidence scores
  • File quality, language and layout factors that affect accuracy
  • Lab: extract data from PDF invoices and save it to a table

Section 3: Lab: Reading Text from Images and Other Documents

  • Text recognition for photos and scanned documents
  • An overview of other prebuilt models such as business card, ID reader and contract processing
  • Personal data and PDPA considerations when processing documents
  • Lab: photograph a document and store its text in a system

Section 4: Lab: Analysing Text

  • Sentiment analysis, key phrase extraction and language detection
  • Prebuilt entity extraction and category classification
  • Check which languages each model supports, and when to use a prompt instead
  • Lab: sort customer feedback emails by sentiment and category

Section 5: Lab: Building Prompts in Power Platform

  • Create prompts in AI hub with text, document or image inputs
  • Return JSON output for use in flows and apps
  • Use Dataverse data as knowledge for a prompt, and choosing a model
  • Lab: a prompt that reads request emails and summarises them as JSON

Section 6: Reliable Prompts and Responsible AI

  • Write instructions, examples and constraints that give consistent results
  • Risks from fabricated output and prompt injection in external content
  • Test prompts against a set of varied examples before going live
  • Lab: refine a prompt until it passes a test set of normal and unusual cases
Day 2 Custom Models in Flows and Apps

Section 7: Lab: Document Processing Models

  • Prepare sample documents, group them into collections by layout and choose the fields you need
  • Tag fields, tables and checkboxes, then train and quick test
  • Fixed-template forms versus documents with varying layouts
  • Lab: build a model that reads a sample company's request form

Section 8: Lab: Custom Text Models

  • Custom category classification from labelled data in Dataverse
  • Custom entity extraction for organisation-specific terms
  • Prepare training data, read performance scores and retrain when data changes
  • Lab: a model that routes service requests to the right department

Section 9: Lab: AI Builder in Power Automate

  • Actions that extract data from documents, invoices and receipts, and the Run a prompt action
  • Pick up files from Outlook and SharePoint and process many files in a loop
  • Map results and JSON into Dataverse or a SharePoint list
  • Lab: a flow that receives invoices by email and records the data automatically

Section 10: Lab: Human Review and Exceptions

  • Set confidence score thresholds for what passes automatically and what needs a person
  • Route items for review through Approvals or Teams, and use Start and wait for an approval of text
  • Log reviewers' corrections to improve models and prompts
  • Lab: add a review step to the invoice flow when confidence is low

Section 11: Lab: AI Builder in Power Apps

  • AI components in apps, such as the receipt processor, text recognizer and document processor
  • Call models and prompts from Power Fx formulas
  • Design screens where users check and correct AI results before saving
  • Lab: a mobile app that photographs receipts and files expense claims

Section 12: Workshop: Automated Document System Capstone

  • Pick real documents from your work, such as invoices, request forms or customer emails
  • Design a flow or app that uses a model or prompt with human review
  • Estimate credit consumption and track usage in the Power Platform admin center

Frequently asked questions

How does this course differ from Power Automate Cloud for Business and Microsoft Power Apps?

This course builds on Power Automate Cloud for Business and Microsoft Power Apps, which each give AI Builder a single topic. This course spends both days on AI Builder: prebuilt models, prompts, document processing models and custom text models, through to use in flows and apps, human review and credit planning.

Which licences and credits do I need, and does the institute provide them?

The institute does not provide accounts, licences, credits or environments. You need your own or your organisation's Power Automate Premium or Power Apps Premium rights, in an environment with AI Builder enabled and enough AI Builder credits or Copilot Credits. Check with your Power Platform admins before the training day.

What does the move from AI Builder credits to Copilot Credits mean?

Microsoft stopped selling AI Builder capacity add-ons on 1 November 2025, and from 1 November 2026 newly purchased premium licences no longer include seeded AI Builder credits. Existing credits remain usable until the end of the contract, after which usage draws on Copilot Credits. AI Builder features themselves keep working. The class explains how to estimate and track credit usage.

Does it work with Thai documents?

It depends on the model. Prompts support Thai, while each prebuilt model and document processing supports different languages. The class shows how to check language support and test with Thai documents, and how to use a prompt instead where a prebuilt model does not yet support Thai. Real results depend on document quality and layout.

Do I need programming or AI experience?

No. Every lab uses the low-code Power Platform interface, but you should be able to build a basic cloud flow or have built a canvas app, so you can use the models in flows and apps comfortably.

Can I use my organisation's real documents in class?

The main labs use sample documents. If you want to try real documents, use only those you are permitted to use, remove personal or confidential data, and work in your organisation's environment in line with its data policies and PDPA.
