Course overview

Many organisations already use Claude every day, but the results still depend on who is giving the instructions. Each person has to type long prompts explaining the steps, the document format and the team's standards every single time, so the output is inconsistent and the know-how of the team's best people is never passed on. Now that Claude works both in the Claude app, where the capabilities of Cowork have been merged into chat, and in Claude Code on the developer side, organisations need a single way to capture the right way of working that applies everywhere.

This course teaches you to build Agent Skills on the open standard, from SKILL.md basics through to bundling several skills into a plugin that installs in both the Claude app and Claude Code. Day 1 is for everyday staff who do not write code: they build skills from their own real work and use them with files, connectors and scheduled tasks. Day 2 moves on to skills with scripts, live data, permission controls and eval-based testing, and to sharing them with the whole team through Git and a plugin marketplace, all within one continuous project, the NovaDesk Skill Kit. (2 days, 6 hours per day, 12 hours in total, Beginner to Intermediate level.)

What you’ll gain

  • Understand Agent Skills, progressive disclosure and how skills differ from project instructions, CLAUDE.md, connectors, subagents and plugins
  • Understand the Claude app after Cowork merged into chat, and where each capability now lives
  • Write SKILL.md files with frontmatter and descriptions that make Claude use them at the right time
  • Create, upload and manage skills in the Claude app alongside files, connectors and scheduled tasks

Curriculum

Course Details

This course focuses on building Agent Skills across both the Claude app and Claude Code, finishing with a plugin for your team. It runs for 2 days, 6 hours per day (12 hours in total, 09:00-16:00), as lectures with labs and workshops built on one continuous project, the NovaDesk Skill Kit. Beginner to Intermediate level. Day 1 needs no code; Day 2 leans towards developers but offers a path through the Code tab in Claude Desktop for anyone not comfortable with the terminal. Learners use their own Claude

Pro or Max plan; the institute does not provide accounts or subscriptions. Claude Cowork for Business, Claude Code Roadmap and Build AI Multi-Agent with Claude Code touch on skills only briefly, so this course suits anyone who wants to master skills from SKILL.md through to plugins. It does not go deep into building your own MCP server, using skills through the Claude API or Agent SDK in applications, or organisation-level admin settings. Claude's menus and features change often, and the content follows the latest version on the training day.

Day 1 Skills Foundations and Building Skills in the Claude App

Section 1: Claude in 2026 and Where Skills Fit

  • The toolset: the Claude app, Claude Code, Projects, connectors, skills and plugins

  • The Claude app after Cowork merged into chat: what changed, what stayed and the role of Claude Code

  • When to use a skill instead of project instructions, CLAUDE.md, a connector (MCP) or a subagent

  • The Agent Skills open standard: write a skill once and use it in many tools

Section 2: Anatomy of a Skill and Progressive Disclosure

  • Skill folder structure: SKILL.md (required), references, assets and scripts

  • YAML frontmatter: name and description, and the rules the Claude app checks on upload

  • Layered loading: Claude sees only the name and description first, then loads the full skill when a task matches

  • Writing a good description: what it does, when to use it, and the words users actually say

Section 3: Lab: Designing Skills from Your Team's Real Work

  • Analyse repeated work: which tasks make good skills and which are not worth it

  • Reference skills (knowledge and standards) versus task skills (step-by-step procedures)

  • Keep skill content concise, with input/output examples and the questions to ask the user first

  • Lab: move long content into reference files to save context

Section 4: Lab: Creating and Managing Skills in the Claude App

  • Turn a conversation that already works well into a skill with skill-creator

  • Write a skill yourself, zip it, upload it through Customize and switch it on or off

  • Let Claude pick a skill from your request, or call it directly from the / menu

  • Combine your skills with Anthropic's ready-made skills for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF

Section 5: Lab: Skills with Files, Connectors and Automation

  • Let a skill read several files you allow and produce a document, slides or a spreadsheet

  • Connect connectors such as Google Drive, Gmail or Slack and define in the skill what to fetch or send

  • Set up a scheduled task so a skill runs on a cycle, such as a report every Monday morning

  • Unattended runs: require confirmation before sending messages or changing data

Section 6: Workshop: Ready-made Plugins and the NovaDesk Skill Kit, Day 1

  • Add plugins from Anthropic's directory and Knowledge Work Plugins, and review their skills before use

  • Build novadesk-brand-voice to set the brand's tone and writing style

  • Build weekly-sales-report and meeting-to-actions from sample sales files and meeting notes

  • Test the skills working together and schedule the sales report to run every week

Day 2 Skills in Claude Code, Testing and Plugins

Section 7: Lab: Claude Code for Every Learner

  • Start Claude Code from the CLI, the Code tab in Claude Desktop or the VS Code extension

  • Where skills live: personal (~/.claude/skills/), project (.claude/skills/), plugins and skills synced from your claude.ai account

  • Custom commands now merged into skills, and running a skill with /skill-name

  • List loaded skills with /skills and see which one wins when names clash

Section 8: Lab: Arguments, Supporting Files and Dynamic Context

  • Take user input with $ARGUMENTS, $0, $1 and named arguments

  • Add Python or Bash scripts to a skill and reference them with ${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}

  • Dynamic context injection with the ! syntax to pull live data, such as git diff, before Claude starts

  • Claude Code-only features compared with standard fields that work everywhere

Section 9: Controlling Invocation, Permissions and Skill Safety

  • disable-model-invocation and user-invocable: decide who can trigger a skill, useful for high-impact tasks

  • allowed-tools pre-approves tools and disallowed-tools blocks tools while a skill runs

  • context: fork and agent: run a skill in a separate subagent for research or review work

  • Read other people's skills and plugins before installing, and never put passwords or API keys in a skill

Section 10: Lab: Testing and Measuring Skills Systematically

  • The baseline idea: compare results with and without the skill

  • Use skill-creator to build test sets, measure pass rate, tokens and time, and compare two versions

  • Tune the description from trigger tests, covering prompts that should and should not use it

  • Check each skill's context cost and usage with /skill-doctor

Section 11: Lab: Packaging Skills as a Plugin and Sharing Them

  • Plugin structure: .claude-plugin/plugin.json, the skills/ folder and extras such as agents, hooks and MCP

  • Create a marketplace with marketplace.json on GitHub and add it with /plugin marketplace add

  • Check the structure with claude plugin validate and test the whole plugin with claude plugin eval

  • Install the same plugin in the Claude app and Claude Code, and share project skills through Git

Section 12: Master Workshop: NovaDesk Skill Kit and Scaling Up

  • Bring the three Day 1 skills into a repository and add a Python check of the sales file to weekly-sales-report

  • Build pr-summary, which pulls the diff with dynamic context and runs in a subagent, plus a user-only release-checklist

  • Test the main skills with baseline evals and tune their descriptions from the results

  • Package everything as the "NovaDesk Skill Kit" plugin, publish it through an internal marketplace and install it on both sides

  • Scaling up: naming, skill owners, review cycles and next steps with the Claude API, Agent SDK and MCP

Instructors

Frequently asked questions

How does this course differ from Claude Cowork for Business, Claude Code Roadmap and Build AI Multi-Agent with Claude Code?

All three touch on skills only briefly. Claude Cowork for Business covers using Claude for business work in general, Claude Code Roadmap covers Claude Code broadly, and Build AI Multi-Agent with Claude Code focuses on directing teams of agents. This course is the skills-specific course across both the Claude app and Claude Code: designing and writing SKILL.md, controlling permissions, measuring with evals, and finally packaging everything as a plugin for your team.

Which accounts do I need, and does the institute provide them?

The institute does not provide accounts or subscriptions. You use your own Claude Pro or Max plan, which includes both skills and Claude Code; the Free plan includes neither. Pro works for the course but may reach its usage limit during long labs, and code execution and file creation must be turned on to use skills in the app. For Day 2 you also need a GitHub account, with Claude Desktop, Git and VS Code installed before the training day.

Can I take the course if I have never written code?

Yes. Day 1 happens entirely in the Claude app with no code. On Day 2, learners who are not comfortable with the terminal can do the labs through the Code tab in Claude Desktop, using sample scripts provided, so they can follow along without writing code themselves. Developers go deeper into arguments, scripts, dynamic context and plugins.

Cowork has merged into chat, so will the content match the app I use?

Anthropic merged Cowork into chat in September 2026 and is rolling it out to Pro and Max plans first, so some accounts may see different screens or menu names during the transition. The instructor updates the content and labs to the latest version on the training day. The core ideas, such as SKILL.md, descriptions, progressive disclosure and plugins, still apply when the interface changes.

Where can I use the skills I build in class?

Skills written to the Agent Skills standard work in the Claude app on the web and desktop and in Claude Code, and also in other tools that adopt the same standard. Once packaged as a plugin, they can be added through Customize in the Claude app or installed from a marketplace in Claude Code, and shared with your team through Git. Some features, such as arguments and dynamic context, work only in Claude Code.

Can I use real company data in class, and how safe are skills?

All labs use sample data from a fictional company, NovaDesk. You may bring examples of your own work, but remove anything confidential first, and use test accounts when connecting connectors. The course teaches you to read other people's skills and plugins before installing them, keep passwords and API keys out of skills, require confirmation before sending messages or changing data, and limit the tools a skill can use.
