Data Analysis & Modeling for BA/SA

Data Analysis & Modeling for BA/SA is a hands-on course in turning business requirements into data models, from conceptual and logical ERDs and normalisation to third normal form through to star schemas for reporting and data quality checks. It suits business analysts, system analysts and product owners who hand work to developers, and you leave with an ERD and a data dictionary ready to use.

Course overview

The most common problem in system projects is not badly written code but misunderstanding the data from the start. Requirement documents written as plain text, which do not say where each piece of data is stored, what it relates to or which business rules govern it, leave the development team to interpret things for themselves. The result is a system whose database structure has to change midway, which is the most expensive kind of change in the development lifecycle.

This course is designed specifically for BAs and SAs, not DBAs. Learners practise turning user interviews and business documents into a conceptual model, a logical model and a data dictionary that can be handed to developers straight away. They learn as much normalisation as they need to make design decisions, how to design models for reporting (dimensional modelling) and how to check data quality before a project starts. Both days are one continuous workshop on the NovaRetail case study, so learners see real work from start to finish. (2 days, 6 hours per day, 12 hours in total, Beginner to Intermediate level.)

What you’ll gain

  • Analyse business requirements and break them down into entities, attributes and relationships systematically
  • Draw conceptual and logical entity relationship diagrams (ERDs) correctly and to standard
  • Understand normalisation from 1NF to 3NF and know when to denormalise
  • Produce a data dictionary and business rules catalogue that developers can use straight away
  • Understand the difference between models for day-to-day operations (OLTP) and models for reporting (OLAP/dimensional)
  • Assess data quality and identify data risks during the analysis stage
  • Present and review data models effectively with users and the development team

Who this course is for

  • Business analysts and system analysts who write requirements that involve data
  • Product owners and project managers who review and approve a project's data design
  • Developers and testers who want to understand where database structures come from and communicate better with analysts
  • MIS and reporting teams working with organisational data who want to structure it systematically

Prerequisites

  • An understanding of your organisation's business processes and some experience of requirement gathering
  • Basic use of Excel or Google Sheets
  • Have seen tables in a database or used a system that records data
  • No SQL is needed; querying skills are covered next in Practical SQL & Data Investigation for BA/SA (BASA-02)

Curriculum

Course Details

A 2-day course, 6 hours per day (12 hours in total, 09:00-16:00), run as one continuous workshop on the NovaRetail case study at Beginner to Intermediate level, with no SQL needed. It uses only free tools: dbdiagram.io, draw.io, DBeaver Community Edition and PostgreSQL 17 on Docker. The course builds on Business Requirement Essentials for BA/SA (BASA-00) and focuses on data design from the BA/SA side rather than DBA work. Learners take home templates for a data dictionary, business rules catalogue and data requirement document, worksheets with answers, and the ERD and star schema they build in class.

Day 1 From Business Requirements to Data Models

Section 1: The BA/SA Role in Data Design

  • Why data model mistakes are the most expensive in a project
  • What BAs and SAs are responsible for compared with data architects and DBAs
  • Standard deliverables: data requirement document, ERD and data dictionary
  • Introducing the NovaRetail case: members, products, in-store sales and a loyalty points programme

Section 2: The Three Levels of Data Models

  • Conceptual models for communicating with executives and users
  • Logical models for agreeing details with the development team
  • Physical models and what BAs and SAs should know without building them

Section 3: Lab: Extracting Data Structures from Requirements

  • Noun-verb analysis to find entities and relationships in text
  • Telling entities from attributes when they are easily confused, such as whether an address is a column or a table
  • Questions to always ask users so history and status are not missed
  • Lab: identify entities, attributes and relationships from requirement documents and interviews

Section 4: Lab: Drawing Correct, Readable ERDs

  • Crow's foot notation and reading cardinality in business language
  • One-to-one and one-to-many relationships, and resolving many-to-many with an associative entity
  • Optional and mandatory relationships and their effect on screen design
  • Lab: draw an ERD in dbdiagram.io and export it for your documents

Section 5: Lab: Choosing Keys and Managing Business Rules

  • Natural keys versus surrogate keys: pros, cons and when to choose each
  • Composite keys and what to watch for when the system integrates with others
  • Recording business rules the model cannot express in a business rules catalogue
  • Lab: define primary, foreign, natural and surrogate keys with the reasoning behind each

Section 6: Day 1 Workshop: NovaRetail Logical ERD

  • Workshop: analyse interviews with the store manager and the marketing team
  • Turn them into a conceptual model, then expand it into a logical ERD with cardinality
  • Cover members, products, sales and loyalty points
  • Build an initial business rules catalogue and revise the ERD during a review with users
Day 2 Normalisation, Data Dictionaries and Models for Reporting

Section 7: Lab: The Normalisation BAs and SAs Actually Need

  • Problems caused by unnormalised tables: update, insert and delete anomalies
  • 1NF, 2NF and 3NF step by step with examples from real systems
  • When to denormalise on purpose and how to record the reasoning
  • Lab: find tables that break normalisation rules and fix them up to 3NF

Section 8: Building a Professional Data Dictionary

  • What it must contain: field name, business meaning, data type, length, nullable and default value
  • Defining domains and code lists, such as order status and member type
  • Naming data owners and data stewards to support data governance
  • Personal data under PDPA and flagging sensitive fields

Section 9: Lab: Data History and Models for Reporting

  • Current versus historical data: audit trails, soft deletes and effective dates
  • Slowly changing dimensions Type 1 and Type 2 in terms a BA can work with
  • Why reporting systems should not use the same structure as operational systems
  • Fact and dimension tables with a defined grain, and star schema versus snowflake schema
  • Linking executive reporting requirements to measures and dimensions
  • Lab: design fact and dimension tables for a monthly sales report

Section 10: Lab: Assessing Data Quality from the Analysis Stage

  • Core data quality dimensions: completeness, accuracy, consistency and uniqueness
  • Recording data risks in project documents to communicate with management
  • Lab: explore the NovaRetail legacy database with DBeaver to find duplicates and missing values, then record the risks

Section 11: Reviewing the Model with Stakeholders

  • Presenting an ERD so that non-technical users can follow it
  • A checklist for reviewing the model before handing it to developers
  • Version control for models and documents when requirements change

Section 12: Day 2 Master Workshop: Refining the Model and a NovaRetail Star Schema

  • Workshop: review and improve the Day 1 model so it passes 3NF
  • Complete the data dictionary with code lists and design a star schema for the monthly sales report
  • Present the model to the group, take feedback and make real revisions
