AI for Architects, Engineers and BOQ is a hands-on workshop in using AI with design and construction documents, from summarising tenders and drafting specifications to reviewing a BOQ for missing items and unusual rates, comparing quotations and writing progress reports, with people checking every quantity and price. It suits architects, engineers, contractors and quantity surveyors.
Architects, engineers, contractors and quantity surveyors spend a great deal of time on documents: reading tender terms of reference, writing specifications, preparing and checking bills of quantities, comparing quotations and writing progress reports. This work demands precision, because a single missing item or wrong unit can affect the cost of the whole project. AI tools can read, summarise, draft and spot inconsistencies very quickly, but AI can also miscalculate, guess figures and cite standards that do not exist.
This course shows learners how to use ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot and Excel with design and construction documents through a sample project that runs all day. It covers summarising the terms of reference, drafting specifications and method statements, structuring a BOQ, using AI to find missing items, wrong units and unusual unit rates, comparing quotations, writing progress reports from site notes and creating concept images with Nano Banana. Throughout, quantities, prices and professional sign-off are always checked and decided by people. It closes with a workshop in which learners assemble an AI toolkit for their projects. (1 day, 6 hours, Beginner level.)

Course Details
A 1-day, 6-hour workshop (09:00-16:00) built around a sample project that runs through every topic. Beginner level, with no programming background needed. Learners use their own or their company's ChatGPT, Claude or Microsoft 365 Copilot account, plus a Gemini account for Nano Banana; some features, such as Copilot in Excel, need a separate licence. The course focuses on the documents that design and construction teams produce. It does not teach quantity take-off in CAD or BIM software and does not use AI for structural calculations; quantities and prices are always confirmed by the person responsible. Learners take home a prompt library, the sample project files, a BOQ review checklist and a weekly progress report template.
Day 1: Using AI with Project Documents, Reports and BOQs
Section 1AI in Design and Construction
What AI does well: reading, summarising, drafting and finding inconsistencies between documents
What people must decide: quantities, prices, structural calculations and professional sign-off
Where AI often goes wrong: arithmetic errors, guessed figures and standards or clauses that do not exist
Confidentiality of drawings, prices and client data, and using company accounts
Choosing the right tool: ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot and Excel
Section 2Lab: Prompts for Design and Construction Work
Give project context: building type, scope of work and the reference documents to follow
Instruct AI to answer only from the documents provided and to cite the page or clause
Ask for tables that paste straight into Excel
Build a Thai-English technical glossary so the whole project uses consistent terms
Lab: write a project brief for the sample project and start a prompt library
Section 3Lab: Summarising Terms of Reference and Tender Documents
Summarise the terms of reference into scope, key conditions, deadlines and evaluation criteria
Extract the list of required submission documents as a checklist with owners
Find conflicts between the terms of reference, the drawing list and the specification
Collect questions to raise with the client for clarification
Lab: spot-check the AI summary against the original documents point by point
Section 4Lab: Drafting Specifications and Method Statements
Draft specification sections from the organisation's template and the project requirements
Leave standards and material brands as placeholders for engineers to fill from verified sources
Draft a method statement covering sequence, equipment and quality checkpoints
Build inspection and QA/QC checklists for each work package
Lab: have AI review the draft specification for vague or conflicting wording
Section 5Lab: Structuring a BOQ in Excel
BOQ structure: work sections, items, units, quantities, material and labour costs
Use AI to draft the item list from the scope and specification to check no section is missing
Quantities come only from the quantity surveyor's take-off; AI does not set the figures
Have AI help write Excel formulas for section totals and unit checks
Lab: put the sample project's BOQ into a format that can be reviewed
Section 6Lab: Reviewing a BOQ with AI
Compare the BOQ with the specification to find missing or duplicated items
Check for units that do not match the type of work and formulas that reference the wrong cells
Find unit rates that are unusually high or low against the organisation's price database
Summarise the findings as a list for the quantity surveyor to confirm, without AI changing figures
Lab: review a sample BOQ with hidden errors and measure how many you catch
Section 7Lab: Quotations and Variations
Combine quotations from several subcontractors into a comparison table
Find differing conditions such as exclusions, duration and warranty
Summarise the effect of additions and omissions on cost and time
Draft variation notices and negotiation records
Lab: build a quotation comparison with notes for management to decide
Section 8Lab: Progress Reports and Site Records
Turn site notes into daily and weekly reports
Use AI to describe site photos and draft captions, with the site supervisor checking every photo
Summarise project meetings into decisions, owners and due dates
Draft clear, complete RFIs and snag lists before handover
Lab: produce a weekly progress report for the sample project
Section 9Lab: Concept Images with Nano Banana
Create concept images and mood boards to discuss direction with clients
Edit photos of the real space to try out materials and colour schemes
Label clearly that these are concept images, not construction drawings or as-built views
Copyright, consent from owners of images and places, and terms for commercial use
Lab: produce three concept options with an explanation for the client
Section 10Workshop: Your Project AI Toolkit
Combine the day's prompt library and checklists into a kit the team can share
Set rules for using AI with drawings, prices and client data
Workshop: run the full flow from tender summary and BOQ review to a progress report on a real project
Review the points that always need checking and sign-off by the responsible person
Present, share feedback and plan how to roll it out in your team
